Collegiate DECA Opens Doors - Networking!
Being in DECA really allowed me to kick start my career path. Not knowing what I was getting myself
into, I signed up for marketing and DECA my senior year of high school, simply just to fulfill an additional
elective credit. Little did I know at the time that it would lead me on a five year journey from there.
DECA really opened up my eyes to the marketing world, and I instantly knew that this was my passion. I
decided to pursue a degree in Marketing at Arizona State University, and would later go on to receive
double majors in Marketing and Tourism Management. Not only did DECA steer me in the right direction
in my career path, it opened up many doors along the way.
Every day was a new networking opportunity with DECA. I had the privilege to travel to Orlando, FL for
ICDC my senior year of high school, and met a number of other students that I keep in contact with to
this day. I was an active member in Collegiate DECA at ASU for my four years there, and I served as Vice
President for one of those years. Through staying in contact with fellow DECA members, I was able to
secure a digital marketing position with Choice Hotels International following graduation, in which my
director is a fellow DECA alumni as well.
If I could offer one piece of advice to current or future DECA members, it would be don’t let any
opportunity pass you by. Take advantage of every career fair, every networking event, and every time
you meet somebody new. You never know if they will end up being your future boss.
